The Nabis artist group was founded in 1888/1889 by a rebellious group of young art students from the Académie Julian in Paris and existed until 1905. Its director, Paul Sérusier , belonged to Paul Gauguin and came from the Pont-Aven school . The group of artists is assigned to post-impressionism .

The artists affiliated to it became known for the variety of media they used. In addition to painting and sculpture , they also worked with printing techniques , poster design , book illustrations , textiles , furniture and stage sets . They were also influential as illustrators in the field of graphic arts. Some of the nabis were influenced by the Japanese woodblock print.

Similar to contemporary art nouveau , some of the nabis put the emphasis on design . Both groups were also associated with symbolism through some of their representatives . The group of artists published their artistic goals primarily in the magazine La Revue blanche .

The name Nabi is derived from the Hebrew word for prophet , coined by Henri Cazalis .
