The Musée du Luxembourg (German Luxembourg Museum) is an art museum in Paris . It is the oldest public museum in France . Its address is 19,  rue de Vaugirard , 75006 Paris.

history

The first museum was initially housed in the east wing of the Palais du Luxembourg , built for Maria de Medici between 1615 and 1630 . Only in the course of the 19th century did it move to the former orangery of the palace. In 1750, the public museum was set up to give the citizens of Paris a glimpse of the French king's important collection of paintings: paintings by Rubens , Leonardo da Vinci , Raffael , Veronese , Titian , Poussin , Van Dyck and Rembrandt were exhibited. The idea goes back to the manager of the royal buildings, Charles François Paul Le Normant de Tournehem. In 1780 the Comte de Provence, later Louis XVIII. , the gallery. The paintings were moved to the Louvre collections . In 1803 the museum was reopened at the instigation of the painter Joseph-Marie Vien , and in 1818 it became a museum for contemporary art. Works by Ingres , Delacroix , Girodet and Jacques-Louis David were shown .

When the Palais and Jardin du Luxembourg became the property of the Senate in 1879, the Senate had the current building built between 1884 and 1886. It was here that the Impressionists were presented for the first time in a national museum, a comprehensive collection of Impressionism was created. In 1937 the collections of the Musée du Luxembourg were relocated to the Musée National d'Art Moderne in the newly built Palais de Tokyo , the Impressionist collection was initially transferred to the Louvre , and since 1986 these have been on display at the Musée d'Orsay .

In 1979 the museum reopened and the French Ministry of Culture held exhibitions of works of art from French museums there. The Senate had a say in the planning of the exhibition and the use of the building. However, in 2000 responsibility went back to the Senate in order to better coordinate the cultural policy in the Palais, Jardin and Musée.

Current situation

In 2010, the Senate transferred the management of the museum to the Réunion des musées nationaux . The museum was extensively renovated by Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines . A restaurant was built outside the museum building and an opportunity for educational offers was created. The Musée du Luxembourg shows changing special exhibitions on the fine arts.
