Shigeru Ban
Shigeru Ban ( Japanese 坂 茂 Ban Shigeru ; born August 5, 1957 in Tokyo Prefecture , Japan ) is a contemporary Japanese architect .
biography
Ban studied at the Southern California Institute of Architecture in Los Angeles in the 1980s and then moved to Cooper Union's School of Architecture in New York City, where John Hejduk was his teacher, and graduated in 1984.
In his work, Ban combines traditional Japanese construction with modern architecture. He is best known for his constructions with cardboard tubes. The Japanese pavilion made of cardboard at Expo 2000 in Hanover was built by Ban in collaboration with Frei Otto and was intended to show what is possible with a cardboard construction.
In 1995, Ban founded the Voluntary Architects' Network , a non-governmental organization with the aim of organizing disaster relief in the field of construction. This initiative resulted in paper-based houses, bridges, schools, concert halls and museums.

- In 2000, Ban received the Baukunst award from the Berlin Art Prize.
- Shigeru Ban has been a member of the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, Architecture Section, since 2006.
- On December 9, 2009, Ban received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Munich .
- In 2014, Ban was awarded the Pritzker Prize . In particular, Ban's creative use of unconventional materials such as paper, for example in the development and construction of emergency shelters for crisis areas, is recognized.
