As a center for all forms of contemporary art, the Center Pompidou-Metz in Metz is a branch of the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris , with which it shares its collections and founding philosophy. It has existed since 2010.

Inner city location

The new museum building is located in the immediate vicinity of the main train station south of the city center. It can be reached on foot from the train station and the city center via a newly built pedestrian bridge that crosses the Passage de L'Amphithéâtre . The museum is located between the Quartier de l'Amphithéâtre and Queuleu , immediately adjacent to the Parc de la Seille , the largest local recreation area in Metz. Two minutes' walk from the Pompidou Center is Les Arènes , the city's large sports hall. The Quartier de l'Amphitèâtre , which covers an area of over 30 hectares, is currently (2010) as an urban wasteland in an undeveloped state; According to the ideas of the city administration, it is to be developed into a new quarter with a multifunctional urban character and complement the city in the south. The Center Pompidou is to form the center of this district development.

Structure

The first branch of the Paris Museum of Modern Art was built according to the plans of the Japanese architects Shigeru Ban and Jean de Gastines . The two architects designed a building for the museum, which from a distance is reminiscent of a circus tent and has a curved wooden roof structure. Its dense wooden construction, which rests on four supports, consists of laminated spruce, which is coated with a waterproof, white membrane skin based on fiberglass and Teflon . As a result, the building that is illuminated at night appears transparent and the structure below becomes visible.

The roof construction only partially passed the first load test in practice. On December 6, 2010, the ceiling tore under a snow load over a length of about two meters; the rest of the roof remained undamaged, according to the administration.

Internal structure of the building

A structural specialty in the interior are three tube-like galleries , stacked in a star shape around an access tower , which are relatively large (84 meters long, 14 meters wide, 5 meters high). At the end there are large-format panorama windows that allow a view of the nearby city center with its Gothic cathedral . The entrance is formed by a foyer about 20 meters high ; Its glass roller door walls can be opened completely in summer and thus seamlessly connect the indoor and outdoor areas. The entire building is dominated by a mast top. It has no structural, but a purely decorative function and, with its height of 77 meters, quotes the sister museum in Paris of the same height.

Exhibition structure

The rooms are designed to be extraordinarily spacious. The central exhibition hall covers a total area of 1200 square meters, which can be set up in any desired cabinet shape according to the presentation requirements . The ceiling height in this hall varies from six to eighteen meters. Affiliated is a studio for theater and cinema screenings. A hall for conferences, lectures and exhibition openings is attached to it. The building also contains a museum shop and a restaurant with a large roof terrace. The foyer with its height of 20 meters can also be used for exhibition purposes, for example for the presentation of oversized sculptures.

Conceptual alignment

True to the spirit and values of the Center Pompidou in Paris - generosity, open-mindedness towards all audiences and all forms of current artistic creation - the Metz branch takes up the strategy of its Parisian sister house through its social and cultural dimension: a platform for exchange between the French Society and artistic creation. The Center Pompidou-Metz is autonomous in its scientific and cultural decisions. It pursues its own programming, drawing inspiration from the spirit of the Center Pompidou and drawing on its know-how, its cultural network and its level of awareness.
The museum is conceived as a space for experience, as a place for the discovery of artistic creation in all its forms. In addition, as a living museum with various events throughout the year; According to his philosophy, the audience should be the focus. The Center Pompidou-Metz should "[...] develop a high quality standard based on a multidisciplinary program that is based on innovative temporary exhibitions of an international format".

The museum in Metz will mainly show contemporary art. In doing so, she can help herself from the stock of the Parisian house (around 60,000 exhibits). A major focus will be on the presentation of the art of the twentieth century, classical modernism .

opening

The museum was officially opened by the former French President Nicolas Sarkozy on May 11, 2010. In the opening week from May 11 to 16, 2010 with the large program of events, around one hundred thousand visitors visited the museum. The almost perfect handicapped accessible equipment stood out in particular.

The opening exhibition Chefs-d'oeuvre? shows 780 works from the holdings of the Paris Museum; they have a total insurance value of around 2 billion euros. A cross-section of important works of classical modernism and modernism is shown .

The city network QuattroPole organized a national festival on June 12, 2010.

The first director of the new art center was the art historian and curator Laurent Le Bon until 2014 . He was involved in the development of the museum building from the start and was thus able to bring his ideas into the conceptual phase.

meaning

The expectation is attached to the Center Pompidou-Metz that it will quickly develop into the cultural emanation point in the greater Saar-Lor-Lux region and in the whole of eastern France. Eastern France feels traditionally neglected in its cultural and economic development in the centrally structured France with its fixation on Paris. In the words of Sarkozy, the all-encompassing centralization on Paris is to be counteracted by a cultural decentralization, which was first realized in the Center Pompidou-Metz . With the first branch of the world's largest French museum, it is assumed that Eastern France and thus the entire greater region will experience a significant upgrade, which should not be limited to the cultural industry and the associated cultural tourism. Due to the direct connection of the new museum to the main train station and the proximity of the Metz airport , positive impulses for the development of the economic power of the Lorraine state metropolis and its surroundings are expected.

The first million visitors were registered in mid-September 2011.
