The Katharinen Hospital is a Christian Catholic hospital in Unna .

Almost 16,000 people are treated in the Katharinen Hospital each year. In addition, there are over 22,000 people in outpatient care. The clinic is an academic teaching hospital of the University of Münster .

history

The pastor of the Katharinengemeinde in Unna, Franz-Josef Brisken, founded in 1888 in a two-storey house with initially two sisters of the Order of the Sisters of Mercy of St. Vincent von Paul a hospital. During the founding year, 60 sick people were cared for and treated in this house of the Catholic community. The number of hospital beds was increased to 70 in 1896 through an extension.

In 1903 another building, the west wing, was added to the old building. A new chapel with a finely structured look was given its place in this western wing building. The number of beds increased to 101 beds. Ten years later, in 1913, the third extension building was handed over to its destination. The expansions continued in 1918 when, at the end of the war, the hospital was able to acquire several adjoining plots of land for horticultural and agricultural use in order to secure food in view of the poor food supply. The large five-story north wing was handed over to its destination in October 1954 in a solemn high mass in the house chapel.

The dynamic development of the hospital continued in the following decades. In 1988 the Katharinen Hospital celebrated its 100th anniversary - in the middle of the construction phase of the large new hospital building. Shortly afterwards in 1991 the new building was occupied. The complete renovation of all other building wings continued until 1996. The completion of the entire construction project was celebrated as part of a week of festivities. In the same year the Katharinen Hospital gGmbH (Katharinen Hospital and St. Bonifatius Retirement and Nursing Home) was founded.

The concept of offering people in the region a high level of medical, nursing and informal competence in health issues was implemented in June 1998 at the first health fair at a hospital in Germany. For this the house received the hospital innovation award. A significant further development in the recent past of the house preceded the recognition of the new specialist departments of cardiology and palliative medicine in 1999. The year 2000 was marked by the founding of the Catholic Hospital Association Hellweg gGmbH, which initially comprised the Katharinen Hospital, the Mariannen Hospital Werl and the St. Bonifatius nursing home as a holding .

In terms of networking and integration, an important step was taken in 2002 with the construction and inauguration of the Medical Center at the Katharinen Hospital with 20 practices and health care facilities. In the field of palliative medicine, the ambulant palliative service was founded on his own initiative. In the same year, the Katharinen Hospital was also one of the first houses in the region to be certified according to the quality management system DIN EN ISO 9001: 2000 and has been reviewed every year since then.

In particular, in 2005 a new focus was set at the Katharinen Hospital due to the regional concentration in the field of gynecology and obstetrics. At this point, the recognition of the Unna-Lünen Breast Center with its operative location at the Katharinen Hospital by the state government was an important step. With the notice of assessment of 2005, full recognition came for the department of gastroenterology. The establishment of centers in the oncological field now complements the Darmzentrum Unna, which was founded in 2006 and which arose from the reorganization and interdisciplinary cooperation between the departments for visceral surgery and gastroenterology . In the same year, the breast center received certification from the Westphalia-Lippe Medical Association . In addition, the diabetology department within Inner Clinic I was able to obtain the certification "Treatment facility for type 1 and type 2 diabetics, level 2" by the German Diabetological Society.

The focus as a cardiological center in the region has been deepened in the Katharinen Hospital through several measures since 2007. An important step in this was the installation of the second cardiac catheter measuring station. Contractual ties with various referring clinics as well as contracts for integrated care in the context of coronary heart disease with health insurance companies, resident doctors and rehabilitation clinics secure this position permanently. The Marienkrankenhaus Soest joined the Catholic Hospital Association Hellweg in February 2007 as a further strong partner. Supply concepts beyond the city limits have since been implemented profitably for the citizens of the region. In addition, the shares in the Marienkrankenhaus Wickede-Wimbern were taken over in 2008.

The current phase within the Katharinen Hospital is characterized by construction work and restructuring. The second medical center is specifically planned. Construction began in January 2010. Areas within the hospital are also being relocated in order to achieve better processes in terms of optimal patient care.
