John Hejduk (1991)

John Quentin Hejduk (born July 19, 1929 in New York , † July 3, 2000 in Riverdale, Bronx ) was an American architect and member of the New York Five architectural group .

Hejduk studied architecture at the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture and the University of Cincinnati . At the Harvard Graduate School of Design , he completed a master's degree in architecture in 1953. Afterwards he worked at IM Pei . In 1965 he settled in New York as a freelance architect. In the following years, Hejduk published several architectural theoretical works. He was a member of the New York Five and Texas Rangers architectural groups . From 1972 to 2000 he was Dean of the Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture in the Department of Architecture. During this time he created architecture discussion circles and, with architects such as Raimund Abraham , Ricardo Scofidio , Peter Eisenman , Charles Gwathmey , Diana Agrest , Diane Lewis , Elizabeth Diller and David Shapiro, significantly shaped the architecture discourse in the USA. The main focus of his work was the architectural discourse.

buildings

Only a handful of buildings designed by him were realized. As part of the International Building Exhibition in Berlin in 1984 , he was able to realize two other buildings in addition to the Kreuzberg Tower in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf district and in Berlin-Tegel . His design for a large-scale structural design from 1982 along the Berlin Wall entitled "Berlin Masque" was never realized.
