Paul-Elie Ranson (born March 29, 1864 in Limoges , † February 20, 1909 in Paris ) was a French designer and painter of symbolism ; and founder of the Paris Académie Ranson .

Life

Paul Ranson was the son of a successful local politician. His mother died shortly after he was born, and he grew up with his maternal grandparents. He received his first drawing lessons from his grandfather; later he studied art history at the École nationale supérieure d'arts décoratifs in Limoges . His teachers recognized his artistic talent and urgently advised him to continue studying in Paris.

In 1888 he went to Paris to study with Tony Robert-Fleury at the renowned Académie Julian . In artsy Montparnasse he maintained a studio and made in a very short time acquaintance with the most famous artists of the city, including Pierre Bonnard , Maurice Denis , Ker-Xavier Roussel , Aristide Maillol , Félix Vallotton and Edouard Vuillard . He soon became close friends with Paul Sérusier . He was one of the co-founders of the Parisian artist group " Nabis " (Prophets).

In 1908 Ranson founded the Académie Ranson together with his cousin and wife Marie-France Rousseau and Paul Sérusier . The school was renowned and had exceptionally good teachers, including: Pierre Bonnard, Maurice Denis, Roger Bissière , Ker-Xavier Roussel , Moise Kisling , Gustave Singier and Aristide Maillol . His most famous students include Roger de la Fresnaye , Alfred Gold , Paul Eliasberg , Ivo Hauptmann , Tamara de Lempicka , Otto Niemeyer-Holstein , Jean Le Moal , Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Gino Severini .

Trivia

  • From the marriage with his cousin Marie-France Rousseau a son, Michel (* 1898), emerged.
  • After his early death, his widow continued the Académie Ranson ; and then his son.
