Prehistory of the old communities

Until 1803, almost all of the old communities and today's parts of the community belonged to the Grünsfeld office in Würzburg and only Poppenhausen to the Tauberbischofsheim office in Mainz. In 1806 all places fell to Baden. From 1813 Poppenhausen was assigned to the Grünsfeld office and the other places came to the Gerlachsheim office. In 1864 the four old parishes were united in the Tauberbischofsheim district office , which in 1939 became part of the Tauberbischofsheim district.

Administrative history of the municipality of Wittighausen

Wittighausen was formed on September 1, 1971 as part of the administrative reform through the merger of the two then independent municipalities Oberwittighausen and Unterwittighausen. On January 1, 1972 Poppenhausen and on December 31, 1972 Vilchband were incorporated. Like its two predecessor communities, Wittighausen initially belonged to the Tauberbischofsheim district. When it was dissolved in 1973, the place became part of the newly formed Tauber District, which was renamed Main-Tauber District a year later .
