The Roman Catholic parish church of St. Agidius in Oberwittighausen , a district of Wittighausen in the Main-Tauber district , was built at the beginning of the 18th century. The Agidius Church is a branch of the All Saints Church in Unterwittighausen , which belongs to the pastoral care unit Grünsfeld-Wittighausen in the deanery Tauberbischofsheim of the Archdiocese of Freiburg .

history

The church replaced a dilapidated previous building. At the mediation of the artillery captain Andreas Müller, the Würzburg prince-bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenklau provided the majority of the construction costs of 2586 Reichstaler. In 1717 the Würzburg architect and court builder Joseph Greissing was commissioned. The construction was completed around 1720.

Church building and equipment

Bells

In the belfry has four bells. The first is rung at 11 o'clock with the tone h´. It is consecrated to the church patron Aegidius . At 12 o'clock the bell rings with the tone a '. It is consecrated to the heart of Mary . The smallest bell, made in 1872, has the tone d '' and is dedicated to Saint Joseph . In the event of deaths in the village, the largest bell is rung with the sound f sharp 'and is therefore also called the “death knell”. It is dedicated to Saint Michael .

organ

An organ installed in 1887 had given up its ghost just two years later. The instrument was probably already used and no longer up-to-date when it was installed. As a consequence, the Oberwittighaus believers received a new organ from the Bader company in Hardheim in 1905 . Almost 100 years later, the Holzwurm had made its way into it, and there were considerations to renovate the instrument. Because this would have been too expensive, it was decided to buy a new one at the turn of the millennium . The organ in St. Aegidius is the newest in the community and was built in 1999 by the organ building company Michael Becker based in the north German town of Sattenfelde .

Inner structure

The church is in the style of the simpler country churches. Built on a hill, it appears well-proportioned despite its simple front and can be seen from afar. The church has a rectangular floor plan and is a plastered building with a one-tower facade made with ashlar details. On the left side altar one can see St. Barbara with her tower and branch insignia . The year 1663 is engraved under the saint in Gothic script.

The right side altar shows Saint Sebastian , the Gothic inscription is dated to 1663.
