Gollachgau

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gollachgau is a flat, undulating, heavily agrarian landscape in the north-west of Middle Franconia . The name comes from the Gollach River , the main river that flows through the landscape from east to west. Together with the Ochsenfurter Gau in Lower Franconia, which is very similar to the northwest , it forms the main natural spatial unit of the Ochsenfurt Gau and Gollachgau within the Main Franconian Plates .

classification

The Gollachgau is located in the north-west of Central Franconia, halfway between Würzburg and Ansbach . The Ochsenfurt Gau, located in the southeast of Lower Franconia, is the natural continuation of the Gollachgau. The boundary of the landscapes roughly corresponds to the boundary of the administrative districts, which here in parts follows a watershed between the Maindreieck and Tauber . To the northeast of the Gollachgau lies the Steigerwald , in the southeast the Windsheim Bay . The Taubertal in the southwest cuts through the Hohenlohe plain to the south .

geology

Geologically, the landscape lies in the little folded Untereuper, which consists mainly of claystone and marl with individual limestone banks and sandstone beds . The limestones of the Upper Muschelkalk below are cut in areas in valleys . In the east, near the Steigerwald , the clayey rocks of Gipskeupers, some of which are gypsum , appear . In the ice ages loess was deposited almost everywhere .

Climate and landscape

The climate is humid all year round with precipitation around 600–640 mm per year and annual average temperatures around 8.5 ° C. The relief is undulating due to the relatively soft rocks of the Lower Copper. The altitude is around 300–340 m above sea level. NN. The Gollach and its tributaries structure the landscape. From Aub on, the Gollach cuts deeper and deeper into the hard limestone of the shell limestone. In the area of the small town of Uffenheim , the capital of the Gollachgau, several meters of shell limestone are also cut in the central area of a tectonic bulge (Uffenheimer Sattel). Here, too, the valley flanks are significantly steeper.

The loess lines the entire landscape and provides the gently undulating character of the relief. Very fertile soils have developed in loess over the past 12,000 years.

human

The good soils, the favorable climate and the low relief are the basis for the strong agricultural character of the area. The village centers are characterized by Franconian three-sided farmsteads. In contrast, the central property of Uffenheim is evident in large official and town houses and a (partially preserved) walling. The geology is noticeable in the building materials of the buildings and sculptures in the region. The easy-to-work sandstone of the Unterseuper and the hard limestone of the shell limestone were used according to their properties.

Due to the north-south running federal motorway 7 and the Treuchtlingen - Ansbach - Würzburg railway line, the Gollachgau is in a relatively convenient location. Uffenheim still has a central supply function within the space. The small town lost its administrative importance in 1972 when the district of Uffenheim in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim was opened up.
