As the Ochsenfurter Gau and Gollachgau (also Ochsenfurter and Gollachgau , main unit 130), two neighboring cultural landscapes in the south of the Mainfränkische Platten (main unit group 13 [= D56 according to BfN]) are summarized in the natural spatial structure of Germany , whose natural spatial features are almost identical. The Ochsenfurt Gau roughly forms the Lower Franconian , the Gollachgau the Central Franconian sub-area. The flat, undulating plateau between the Maindreieck and Taubertal is covered by loess, whose extremely fertile soils are the basis for the intensive agricultural use of the area. Together with the Gäuplatten in the Maindreieck (main unit 134) north of the Main Valley, they form the Franconian Gäu landscapes.

location

The natural area is located in the southeast of Lower Franconia (Ochsenfurter Gau) and in the northwest of Middle Franconia (Gollachgau). The southeast border in the area of the striking Taubertal is also the border between the Main Franconian plates and the Neckar and Tauber-Gäuplatten (main unit group 12 [= D57 according to BfN]). The eastern topographic elevation of the Steigerwald belongs to the Franconian Keuper-Lias-Land (main unit group 11 [= D59 according to BfN]).

The flat Windsheimer Bucht (131) in the southeast of the Gollachgau belongs to the Main Franconian plates. The north-eastern border is formed by the foothills of the undulating Steigerwald foreland (137) and the cut of the Middle Main valley (133). The more mountainous and more wooded Marktheidenfelder Platte (132) border in the northwest .

Natural structure

The Ochsenfurt Gau and Gollachgau are naturally structured as follows:

  • (for 13 Main Franconian plates )
    • 130 Ochsenfurter and Gollachgau
        • 130.00 Reichenberger Grund
        • 130.01 Ifftal area
        • 130.10 Ochsenfurt-Uffenheimer Gäufläche
        • 130.11 Small cattle fields plateau

Geology and morphology

The Gäuplatten are geologically by the hardly verfalteten rocks of shell limestone and the overlying Lower Keuper coined. The relatively soft, predominantly clay - marly rocks of the Unterkeuper only have a few harder limestone and sandstone layers . Unterkeuper is the dominant geological unit of the flat undulating plateau. In the valleys of the Main and Tauber (and near the mouth of the tributaries), however, the hard limestones of the shell limestone are cut. Due to the higher rock hardness, the relief energy increases significantly. In the Quaternary glacial periods was partly deposited on the plateau meter thick loess. As a result, the scarcely articulated relief was further balanced.

Soil and climate

In the Holocene , very fertile soils developed in the loess. The climate is humid all year round with precipitation around 600 mm per year, with annual average temperatures around 9.2 ° C.

human

The good soils, the favorable climate and the low relief are the basis for the strong agricultural character of the area. The village centers are characterized by Franconian three-sided farmsteads. The geology is noticeable in the building materials of the buildings and sculptures in the region. The easy-to-work sandstone of the Unterseuper and the hard limestone of the shell limestone were used according to their properties.
