The Ifftal area is a small-scale natural spatial unit (5th order) with the order number 130.01 in the area of the Franconian communities of Ippesheim , Marktbreit , Martinsheim , Obernbreit and Seinsheim in the districts of Kitzingen and Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim .

location

The Ifftal area (130.01) forms a sub-unit within the nameless main unit 130.0. It is part of the Ochsenfurter and Gollachgau (130) and thus a natural area in the main unit group of the Mainfränkische Platten . The Ifftal area comprises the valley system of the Breitbach tributary and its tributaries. In the north it is bounded by the Mainbernheimer level (137.00), in the east is the Hellmitzheimer Bucht (137.10). Both natural spaces are part of the Steigerwald foreland (137). The Ochsenfurt-Uffenheimer Gäufläche (130.10) joins in the south . Only in the northwest does the landscape open up to the Würzburg-Ochsenfurter Main Valley (133.04) in the Middle Main Valley (133).

The natural area is located in the extreme south of the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen and in the extreme north of the Middle Franconian district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim. The focus is on the Neuwiesenbach, Iff, Ickbach and Steinbach streams, all of which flow into the Breitbach and finally into the Main . The area is particularly densely populated around Marktbreit. The Würzburg-Treuchtlingen railway runs through the valley of Ickbach and Breitbach .

Landscape characteristics

The Ifftal area is a deeply cut side valley system of the Main. The valley of the Breit- or Ifftal forms the border area between the flat Gäuf areas around Ochsenfurt and the higher Steigerwald foreland . The specialty of the landscape is the particularly deep valley cut of the Main tributaries. There, the Ifftal area has similarities with the Thierbachtal near Ochsenfurt, which also has such deeply cut valleys between the main plain and plateaus.

In the past, the steep slopes of the valley were temporarily occupied with vines, until the second half of the 19th century viticulture was practiced. Today the area is characterized by small arable or meadow areas, which are occasionally bordered by stone bars or old terrace walls with blackthorn hedges . The natural vegetation without human intervention would produce extensive riparian forests with ash , alder and spruce in the valley floor .

Protected areas

In contrast to many other natural areas, there are no protected areas in the higher protection categories in the vicinity of the Iff or Breitbach. Only at Bullenheim is part of the bird sanctuary in the southern Steigerwald foreland. The banks of the small Main tributaries are registered as biotopes .

Geology and tectonics

The small streams in the Ifftal area have very different geological subsoil. The sources of Iff and Breitbach are in the Gipskeuper . Both bodies of water created their valleys in the direction of the Main in the soft Lettenkeuper , so that there are also flatter valleys in this section. From Tiefenstockheim or Iffigheim and Winkelhof, the streams reach the rocks of the much harder Upper Muschelkalk , where the typical steep valleys of the natural area emerged.
