Geographical location

Wässerndorf is relatively centrally located in the municipality of Seinsheim. The district of Tiefenstockheim begins in the north and Seinsheim is in the east. Wässerndorf is connected to the main town via the KT 26 district road. Coming from the south, the Breitbach tributary Iff flows through the village, there are also two mills ( Lungenmühle , Gehrenmühle ) on the Wässerndorfer district. Further south, the area of the municipality of Ippesheim in the district of Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim in Central Franconia begins with the district of Bullenheim . Winkelhof is to the west .

In terms of nature, the districts of Seinsheim are divided into three different sub-units. The Ifftal area with its small streams and steep banks protrudes from the north-west into the municipality. To the northeast is the Hellmitzheimer Bucht , smaller parts are in the higher Ochsenfurt-Uffenheimer Gäuf area .

history

Wässerndorf is one of the Franconian new settlements of the 13th century. The village was called "Westerndorph" when it was founded because it was in the west of the mother village of Seinsheim. Over the centuries the village was renamed several times until it got its current name Wässerndorf. It is the only place in the area with the ending dorf . The small Winkelhof on the Ickbach belongs to Wässerndorf.

For a long time, Wässerndorf and seven other villages had a share in the so-called Kunigunden Forest , which was administered in the form of a market cooperative . This form of administration was only dissolved in 1458.

The Knights of Seinsheim had lived in Wässerndorf since the 13th century . After the knights of Seinsheim-Westerndorf had died out, Count Friedrich von Schwarzenberg had the castle built over parts of an older castle complex in 1555 . In April 1945, the palace and the archives stored there from the Würzburg State Archives were destroyed by American troops. Today the ruin is the landmark of Wässerndorf.

The manors of the von Schwarzenbergs in Wässerndorf and Winkelhof were confiscated by the Reich Settlement Office in 1938 and assigned to the Bonnland farmers who were forced to evacuate. The citizens of Bonnland were resettled there because of the expansion of the Hammelburg military training area. The architectural similarity of all Bonnlandhöfe is striking.

On May 1, 1978, the previously independent municipality of Wässerndorf was incorporated into the Seinsheim market.

One of the most impressive parts was a room decorated with tendril frescoes. The castle was set on fire by the American forces on April 5, 1945 and burned down to the ground.
