history
Village history
Unterwittighausen was first mentioned in a document in 1060 and was first named "Inferior Witegehusen" (Unterwittighausen) in 1243, in contrast to "Wittingenhusen superior" (Oberwittighausen). In the early Middle Ages there was a wall around the farming village, which was accessible through the upper and lower gate. The construction of the railway in 1865/1866 brought about a serious change in the village structure, as the village developed more and more into a mixed community with around 200 commuters in the following years. The municipality of Wittighausen was formed on September 1, 1971 as part of the administrative reform by merging the two then independent municipalities of Oberwittighausen and Unterwittighausen.
