Essex County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 9,989 people and a population density of 15 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Tappahannock .

Essex County is located almost in northeastern Virginia, about 15 miles from Maryland , and covers an area of ​​740 square kilometers, of which 73 square kilometers are water. It was formed in 1692 from (old) Rappahannock County. It was named after the county of the same name in England or after the Duke of Essex.
