Mecklenburg County is a county in the state of Virginia in the United States . In 2000, the county had 32,380 residents and a population density of 20 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Boydton . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

Mecklenburg County is located in the extreme south of Virginia, bordering North Carolina and has an area of 1759 square kilometers, of which 143 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by Counties Halifax , Charlotte , Lunenburg, and Brunswick in Virginia and Warren , Vance, and Granville in North Carolina.
The county is home to the dam and much of the John H. Kerr Reservoir .

According to the 2000 census , Mecklenburg County had 32,380 people in 12,951 households and 8,962 families. The population density was 20 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 59.24 percent white, 39.08 percent African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.30 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.48 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.68 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.21 percent of the population.
Of the 12,951 households, 26.5 percent had children and young people under the age of 18 living with them. 51.0 percent were married couples living together, 14.1 percent were single mothers, 30.8 percent were non-families, 27.2 percent were single households, and 13.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.87 people.
For the entire county, the population was composed of 21.6 percent of residents under the age of 18, 7.2 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 27.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, and 26.0 percent between 45 and 64 years of age 17.8 percent were 65 years of age or over. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females there were 97.3 males. For every 100 women aged 18 or over there were statistically 96.5 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,380 USD , and the median income for a family was 37,752 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,852 versus $ 19,609 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,171. 11.6 percent of families and 15.5 percent of the population were below the poverty line. Of these, 20.6 percent were children or adolescents under 18 years of age and 17.3 percent were people over 65 years of age.
