Vance County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The administrative headquarters ( the county seat ) is Henderson that by Leonard Henderson was named a judge on the Supreme Court of the United States .

geography

The county is located in northern North Carolina, bordering Virginia and has an area of ​​699 square kilometers, of which 42 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Warren Counties , Franklin Counties , and Granville Counties in North Carolina, and Mecklenburg County in Virginia.

A large tributary of the John H. Kerr Reservoir - the flooded valley of Nutbush Creek and several tributaries - extends from the Virginia border to almost the town of Henderson in the county.

Vanve County is divided into eight townships : Dabney, Henderson, Kittrell, Middleburg, Sandy Creek, Townsville, Watkins, and Williamsboro.

history

Vance County was formed on March 5, 1881 from parts of Franklin County, Granville County and Warren County. The creation of the county happened out of electoral considerations ( Gerrymandering ). The predominantly Republican- elected, African-American population was consolidated in the new county, giving Franklin and Granville Counties a secure Democratic majority. It was named after the US Senator and former Governor Zebulon Baird Vance .

A total of 21 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 16, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Vance County had 42,954 people in 16,199 households and 11,647 families. The population density was 65 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 48.21 percent white, 48.31 percent African American, 0.20 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.03 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.84 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.56 percent of the population.

Of the 16,199 households, 33.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.0 percent of these were married couples living together, 20.4 percent were single mothers and 28.1 percent were non-families. 24.2 percent were single households and 9.9 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.06.

27.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64, and 12.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For all females there were 89.7 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 84.3 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,301, and the median income for a family is $ 36,389. Males had a median income of $ 28,284 versus $ 21,433 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,897. 20.5 percent of the population and 16.3 percent of families are below the poverty line. 27.7 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 19.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
