Lenoir County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Kinston .

The county is located in east-central North Carolina and has an area of ​​1,041 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Greene County , Pitt County , Craven County , Jones County , Duplin County, and Wayne County .

Lenoir County is divided into 12 townships : Contentnea Neck, Falling Creek, Institute, Kinston, Moseley Hall, Neuse, Pink Hill, Sand Hill, Southwest, Trent, Vance and Woodington.

Kinston Regional Airport is in the county .

history

Lenoir County was formed in 1791 from the now defunct Dobbs County, named after William Lenoir , a general in the American Revolutionary War and hero in the Battle of Kings Mountain .

According to the 2000 census , Lenoir County had 59,648 people in 23,862 households and 16,178 families. The population density was 58 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.47 percent white, 40.43 percent African American, 0.18 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 1.88 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.66 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.17 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
