Lincoln County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Lincolnnton .
geography
The county is located in west-central North Carolina, about 30 km south of South Carolina and has an area of 795 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Catawba County , Iredell County , Mecklenburg County , Gaston County , Cleveland County, and Burke County .
Lincoln County is divided into townships : Catawba Springs, Howards Creek, Ironton, Lincolnnton, and North Brook.
history
Lincoln County was formed from the defunct Tryon County in 1778. It was named after Benjamin Lincoln , a general in the American War of Independence , like the district capital of Lincoln .

As of the 2000 census , Lincoln County, North Carolina, had 63,780 people in 24,041 households and 18,174 families. The population density was 82 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.24 percent white, 6.44 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.31 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.73 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.0 percent are of multiple races and 5.73 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 24,041 households, 34.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.2 percent of them were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers and 24.4 percent were not classic families. 20.1 percent were single households and 7.8 percent had people over 65 years of age. The average household size was 2.62, the average family size 3.00 people.
24.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 7.7 percent were 18 to 24 years old, 31.7 percent 25 to 44 years old, 24.2 percent 45 to 64, and 11.5 percent 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 98.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 years or over, there were 96.6 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 41,421, and the median income for a family is $ 47,752. Males had a median income of $ 32,394 versus $ 22,362 for females. The per capita income was $ 18,877. 9.2 percent of the population and 6.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 10.9 percent of them were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.1 percent were 65 years of age or older.
