Buncombe County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Asheville .
geography
The county is located in western North Carolina, about 30 km to the north from Tennessee , to the south about 35 km from South Carolina , and has an area of 1,709 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Madison County , Yancey County , McDowell County , Rutherford County , Henderson County, and Haywood Counties .
Buncombe County is divided into 15 townships : Asheville, Avery Creek, Black Mountain, Broad River, Fairview, Flat Creek, French Broad, Ivy, Leicester, Limestone, Lower Hominy, Reems Creek, Sandy Mush, Swannanoa, and Upper Hominy.
history
Buncombe County was formed on January 14, 1792 from parts of Burke County and Rutherford County. It was named, like the district capital Asheville, after Edward Buncombe , an officer in the American Revolutionary War .
There are two National Historic Landmarks in the county , the Biltmore Estate and the Thomas Wolfe House . A total of 116 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 23, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , there were 206,330 people in Buncombe County. Of these, 6,765 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 85,776 households and 55,668 families. The population density was 121 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 89.06 percent white, 7.48 percent African American, 0.39 percent Native American, 0.66 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 1.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.23 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.78 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 85,776 households, 27.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 50.5 percent of these were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers and 35.1 percent were non-families. 28.9 percent were single households and 10.6 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.86 people.
21.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 29.3 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 24.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For all females there were 92.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 88.9 men.
The median income for a household (median) was 36 666 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 45,011. Males had a median income of $ 30,705 and females $ 23,870. The per capita income was $ 20,384. 11.4 percent of the population and 7.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. 15.3 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 9.8 percent are 65 years of age or older.
