Moore County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Carthage .

The county is located just south of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 25 miles south of South Carolina and has an area of 1,828 square kilometers, of which 21 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Chatham County , Lee County , Harnett County , Cumberland County , Hoke County , Richmond County , Montgomery County, and Randolph Counties .

Moore County is divided into 10 numbered townships : 1 (Carthage), 2 (Bensalem), 3 (Sheffields), 4 (Knights), 5 (Deep River), 6 (Greenwood), 7 (McNeill), 8 (Sandhill), 9 (Mineral Springs) and 10 (Little River).

history

Moore County was formed in 1784 from parts of Cumberland County. It was named after Captain Alfred Moore , a judge on the Supreme Court of the United States and an officer in the American Revolutionary War .

The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Pinehurst Historic District . A total of 29 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 8, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Moore County had 74,769 people in 30,713 households and 21,959 families. The population density was 41 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.25 percent white, 15.50 percent African American, 0.68 percent Native American, 0.44 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.20 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.88 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.99 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 30,713 households, 26.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 10.2 percent were single mothers and 28.5 percent were non-families. 24.9 percent were single households and 11.3 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.81 people.

22.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.6 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 25.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 23.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 21.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For all females there were 93.0 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 89.8 men.

The median income for a household in the 41,240 US dollars and the median income for a family was 48,492 USD. Males had a median income of $ 31,260 versus $ 23,526 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,377. 11.4 percent of the population and 8.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. 16.6 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 10.1 percent are 65 years of age or older.
