Jackson County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Sylva , which was named after the carpenter William D. Sylva .

The county is located far to the west of North Carolina, borders South Carolina to the south , is about 30 km from Tennessee to the north and has an area of 1,281 square kilometers, of which 10 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Haywood County , Transylvania County , Macon County, and Swain County .
Jackson County is divided into 15 townships : Barker's Creek, Canada, Caney Fork, Cashiers, Cullowhee, Dillsboro, Greens Creek, Hamburg, Mountain, Qualla, River, Savannah, Scott Creek, Sylva and Webster.
history
Jackson County was formed in 1851 from parts of Haywood County and Macon County. It was named after President Andrew Jackson .
A total of 20 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 3, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Jackson County had 33,121 people in 13,191 households and 8,587 families. The population density was 26 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 85.68 percent white, 1.67 percent African American, 10.20 percent Native American, 0.51 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.55 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.38 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.74 percent of the population.
Of the 13,191 households, 25.5 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 51.4 percent of these were married couples living together, 10.0 percent were single mothers and 34.9 percent were non-families. 27.0 percent were single households and 9.8 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.79 people.
19.0 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 17.9 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 24.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 25.0 percent between 45 and 64, and 13.8 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 95.4 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 93.1 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 32,552 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,876. Males had a median income of $ 27,738 versus $ 22,029 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,582. 15.1 percent of the population and 9.5 percent of families are below the poverty line. 15.7 percent of them are children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 15.2 percent are 65 years of age or older.
