Tyrrell County is the most populous county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Columbia , which was founded around 1700 as a trading post.

The county is located in eastern North Carolina, about 50 miles north of Virginia and has an area of 1,555 square kilometers, of which 545 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Pasquotank County , Camden County , Currituck County , Dare County , Hyde County , Washington County, and Perquimans County .
Tyrrell County is divided into five townships : Alligator, Columbia, Gum Neck, Scuppernong, and South Fork.

Tyrrell County was formed in 1729 from parts of Bertie County, Chowan County, Currituck County, and Pasquotank County. It was named after John Tyrrell , a Lord Proprietor in the Province of Carolina .
Three buildings and sites in the county are on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Tyrrell County had 4,149 people in 1,537 households and 1,055 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 56.47 percent white, 39.43 percent African American, 0.19 percent Native American, 0.75 percent Asian and 2.05 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.11 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.62 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,537 households, 28.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.4 percent of these were married couples living together, 16.6 percent were single mothers and 31.3 percent were non-families. 28.2 percent were single households and 14.4 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.95 people.
22.7 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 8.2 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 30.3 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64, and 16.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For all females there were 114.1 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 114.2 men.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 25,684, and the median income for a family is $ 32,468. Males had a median income of $ 26,227 versus $ 18,403 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,326. 23.3 percent of the population and 19.1 percent of families are below the poverty line. 31.5 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 20.8 percent are 65 years of age or older.
