Rutherford County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . In 2000 , the county had 62,899 residents and a population density of 43 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Rutherfordton .

geography

The county is located in west-central North Carolina, bordering South Carolina to the south and has an area of ​​1,466 square kilometers, of which 5 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: McDowell County , Burke County , Cleveland County , Polk County , Henderson County, and Buncombe County .

Rutherford County is divided into 14 townships : Camp Creek, Chimney Rock, Colfax, Cool Springs, Duncans Creek, Gilkey, Golden Valley, Green Hill, High Shoals, Logan Store, Morgan, Rutherfordton, Sulfur Springs, and Union.

history

Rutherford County was formed in 1779 from parts of the defunct Tryon County . It was named, like the district capital Rutherfordton, after Griffith Rutherford , a member of the provincial congress and general in the American Revolutionary War .
