Montgomery County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Troy .

geography

The county is located slightly southwest of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 40 km to the south from South Carolina and has an area of ​​1,299 square kilometers, of which 26 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Randolph County , Moore County , Richmond County , Stanly County, and Davidson Counties .

Montgomery County is divided into eleven townships : Biscoe, Cheek Creek, Eldorado, Little River, Mount Gilead, Ophir, Pee Dee, Rocky Springs, Star, Troy, and Uwharrie.

history

Montgomery County was formed in 1779 from parts of Anson County. It was named after General Richard Montgomery , who was killed in the Battle of Québec in 1775 .

The county has a National Historic Landmark , the Town Creek Indian Mound archaeological site . Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 8, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Montgomery County had 26,822 people in 9,848 households and 7,189 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 69.07 percent white, 21.84 percent African American, 0.40 percent Native American, 1.61 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.75 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.29 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 10.43 percent of the population.

Of the 9,848 households, 31.0 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.6 percent of these were married couples living together, 12.4 percent were single mothers and 27.0 percent were non-families. 24.1 percent were single households and 10.7 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.08 people.

24.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.0 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 28.5 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For all females there were 102.6 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 100.6 men.

The median income for a household in the 32,903 US dollars and the median income for a family was 39,616 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,832 versus $ 21,063 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,504. 15.4 percent of the population and 10.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 19.5 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 17.8 percent are 65 years of age or older.
