Northampton County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Jackson , named after the seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson .

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, borders Virginia to the north and has an area of ​​1,426 square kilometers, of which 37 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hertford County , Bertie County , Halifax County, and Warren Counties .

Northampton County is divided into seven townships : Gaston, Garysburg, Jackson, Rich Square, Seaboard, and Conway.

history

Northampton County was formed in 1741 from parts of Bertie County. It was named after James Crompton, 5th Earl of Northampton .

The Northampton County Courthouse Square is (2017) one of 16 entries of the county in National Register of Historic Places .

As of the 2000 census , Northampton County had 22,086 people in 8,691 households and 5,953 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 39.09 percent white, 59.43 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races.
