Mitchell County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Bakersville , named after David Baker , an early settler in the area.

The county is located in western North Carolina, borders Tennessee to the north and has an area of ​​575 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Avery County , McDowell County, and Yancey Counties .

Mitchell County is divided into nine townships : Bakersville, Bradshaw, Cane Creek, Fork Mountain-Little Rock Creek (previously two separate townships), Grassy Creek, Harrell, Poplar, Red Hill and Snow Creek.

history

Mitchell County was formed on February 16, 1861 from parts of Burke County, Caldwell County, MacDowell County, Watauga County, and Yancey County. It was named after Dr. Elisha Mitchell , a professor at the University of North Carolina who died exploring Mount Mitchell .

Nine structures and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 8, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Mitchell County had 15,687 people in 6,551 households and 4,736 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.87 percent white, 0.22 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 0.20 percent Asian and 0.66 percent from other ethnic groups; 0.60 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.98 percent of the population.

Of the 6,551 households, 27.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 60.9 percent of these were married couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers and 27.7 percent were non-families. 25.2 percent were single households and 12.0 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.82 people.

21.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 27.1 percent between 45 and 64, and 18.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For all females there were 95.6 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 92.3 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,508, and the median income for a family is $ 36,367. Males had a median income of $ 26,550 versus $ 20,905 for women. The per capita income was $ 15,933. 13.8 percent of the population and 10.7 percent of families are below the poverty line. 17.2 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 16.4 percent are 65 years of age or older.
