Mecklenburg County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . In 2012 , the county had 969,031 residents and a population density of over 700 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Charlotte .

geography

The county is located in southwest North Carolina, borders South Carolina to the south and has an area of ​​1,415 square kilometers, of which 52 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Iredell County , Cabarrus County , Union County , Gaston County, and Lincoln County .

Mecklenburg County is divided into 15 numbered townships : 1 (Charlotte), 2 (Berryhill), 3 (Steele Creek), 4 (Sharon), 5 (Providence), 6 (Clear Creek), 7 (Crab Orchard), 8 (Mallard Creek), 9 (Deweese), 10 (Lemley), 11 (Long Creek), 12 (Paw Creek), 13 (Morning Star), 14 (Pineville), and 15 (Huntersville).

history

Mecklenburg County was formed in 1762 from parts of Anson County. It was named, like the district capital Charlotte, after Sophie Charlotte von Mecklenburg-Strelitz , the wife of King George III. of Great Britain . In 1769 Tryon County was split off.

On January 19, 1994, a partnership agreement was concluded between the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Mecklenburg County .

The Philanthropic Hall, Davidson College (2005) is one of 100 entries for the county on the National Register of Historic Places .

According to the 2000 census , there were 695,454 people in Mecklenburg County. 15,412 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 273,416 households and 174,986 families. The population density was 510 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 64.02 percent white , 27.87 percent African American , 0.35 percent Native American , 3.15 percent Asian , 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 3.01 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.55 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.45 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.06.

25.1 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.7 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 36.4 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 20.3 percent between 45 and 64, and 8.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 women aged 18 or over, there were 93.6 men.

The median income for a household in the county was $ 50,579 , and the median income for a family was $ 60,608. Males had a median income of $ 40,934 versus $ 30,100 for women. The per capita income was $ 27,352. 9.2 percent of the population and 6.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. 11.5 percent of them are children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
