Durham County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Durham on the Eno River .

geography

The county is located slightly northeast of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 40 km to the north from Virginia and has an area of ​​771 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Person County , Granville County , Wake County , Chatham County, and Orange County .

Durham County is divided into six townships : Carr, Durham, Lebanon, Mangum, Oak Grove, and Triangle.

history

Durham County was formed on February 28, 1881 from parts of Orange County and Wake County. It was named after Dr. Bartlett Snipes Durham , a large landowner who donated land for the train station around which the city of Durham grew.

The Duke Homestead and Tobacco Factory (2010) is one of four National Historic Landmarks in the county.

There are four National Historic Landmarks in the county , two of which are former tobacco factories. 80 buildings and sites in the county are registered in the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 2, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Durham County had 223,314 people in 89,015 households and 54,032 families. The population density was 297 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 50.91 percent white, 39.46 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 3.29 percent Asian, 0.04 percent from the Pacific island area and 4.21 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.80 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.63 percent of the population.

Of the 89,015 households, 29.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 42.0 percent of these were married couples living together, 14.8 percent were single mothers and 39.3 percent were non-families. 30.0 percent were single households and 7.0 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.99 people.

22.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 12.8 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 34.8 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 19.8 percent between 45 and 64, and 9.7 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 32 years. For all females there were 93.0 males. For all women aged 18 or over, there were 89.7 men.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 43,337 , and the median income for a family is $ 53,223. Males had a median income of $ 35,939 versus $ 30,683 for females. The per capita income was $ 23,156. 13.4 percent of the population and 9.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. 17.2 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 12.3 percent are 65 years of age or older.
