Currituck County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Currituck .
geography
The county is located in the extreme northeast of North Carolina, borders Virginia to the north and has an area of 1,361 square kilometers, of which 684 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Dare County and Camden Counties .
history
Currituck County was formed in 1668. Like the district capital, Currituck, it was named after a tribe of the Algonquin Indians. The translation of the name is "wild geese".
Twelve buildings and sites in the county are listed in the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 24, 2018).

Currituck County had a population of 18,190 as of the 2000 census . 163 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 6,902 households and 5,204 families. The population density was 27 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.41 percent white, 7.25 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.03 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.50 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.97 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.43 percent of the population.
Of the 6,902 households, 33.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.6 percent of these were married couples living together, 9.2 percent were single mothers and 24.6 percent were non-families. 19.4 percent were single households and 7.6 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
25.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.7 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 30.5 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 25.4 percent between 45 and 64, and 12.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For all females there were 98.6 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 97.5 men.
The median income for a household (median) was 40 822 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 46,382. Males had a median income of $ 32,619 versus $ 22,641 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,908. 10.7 percent of the population and 8.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. 16.1 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 8.9 percent are 65 years of age or older.
