Madison County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Marshall , named after John Marshall , a presiding judge on the Supreme Court of the United States .

The county is located in western North Carolina, borders Tennessee to the north and has an area of 1170 square kilometers, of which 6 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Yancey County , Buncombe County, and Haywood Counties .
Madison County is divided into eleven numbered townships : 1 (North Marshall and South Marshall), 2 (Laurel), 3 (Mars Hill), 4 (Beech Glenn), 5 (Walnut), 6 (Hot Springs), 7 (Ebbs Chapel ), 8 (Spring Creek), 9 (Sandy Mush), 10 (Grapevine) and 11 (Revere Rice Cove).
history
Madison County was formed on January 27, 1851 from parts of Buncombe County and Yancey County. It was named after President James Madison .
A total of 15 buildings and sites in the county are registered on the National Register of Historic Places (as of March 4, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Madison County had 19,635 people. 895 of these people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,000 households and 5,592 families. The population density was 17 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 97.63 percent white, 0.83 percent African American, 0.27 percent Native American, 0.23 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 0.45 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; about 0.59 percent are descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 1.35 percent of the population.
Of the 8,000 households, 28.4 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.5 percent of these were married couples living together, 8.9 percent were single mothers and 30.1 percent were non-families. 26.3 percent were single households and 11.8 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.81 people.
21.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 10.3 percent between 18 and 24 years of age, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 26.0 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For all females there were 97.3 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 93.3 men.
The median income for a household in the 30,985 US $ and the median income for a family was $ 37,383. Males had a median income of $ 27,950 versus females of $ 22,678. The per capita income was $ 16,076. 15.4 percent of the population and 10.9 percent of families are below the poverty line. These included 17.6 percent of children and adolescents under the age of 18 and 19.2 percent of senior citizens aged 65 and over.
