Onslow County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Jacksonville , named after the seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson .
geography
The county is located in southeastern North Carolina, borders the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 2353 square kilometers, of which 367 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Jones County , Carteret County , Pender County, and Duplin Counties .
Onslow County is divided into five townships : Jacksonville, Richlands, Sneads Ferry, Swansboro, and White Oak.
history
Onslow County was formed on November 23, 1734 from parts of the defunct Bath County. It was named after Arthur Onslow , a Speaker of the British House of Commons from 1728 to 1761.

According to the 2000 census , Onslow County had 150,355 people in 48,122 households and 36,572 families. The population density was 76 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.06 percent white, 18.48 percent African American, 0.74 percent Native American, 1.68 percent Asian, 0.19 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 3.62 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.22 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 7.25 percent of the population.
Of the 48,122 households, 42.6 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 61.0 percent of these were married couples living together, 11.6 percent were single mothers and 24.0 percent were non-families. 18.6 percent were single households and 5.2 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.09 people.
26.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 23.8 percent were between 18 and 24 years old, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44 years old, 14.4 percent between 45 and 64, and 6.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 25 years. For all females there were 123.2 males. For all women aged 18 or over, there were 131.3 men.
The median income for a household in the 33,756 US dollars and the median income for a family was 36,692 USD. Males had a median income of $ 22,061 versus $ 20,094 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,853. 12.9 percent of the population and 10.8 percent of families are below the poverty line. 16.7 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 14.7 percent are 65 years of age or older.
