Northampton County is a county in the state of North Carolina in the United States . The county seat is Jackson , named after the seventh President of the United States, Andrew Jackson .

The county is located in northeast North Carolina, borders Virginia to the north and has an area of 1,426 square kilometers, of which 37 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Hertford County , Bertie County , Halifax County, and Warren Counties .
Northampton County is divided into seven townships : Gaston, Garysburg, Jackson, Rich Square, Seaboard, and Conway.
history
Northampton County was formed in 1741 from parts of Bertie County. It was named after James Crompton, 5th Earl of Northampton .

As of the 2000 census , Northampton County had 22,086 people in 8,691 households and 5,953 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 39.09 percent white, 59.43 percent African American, 0.32 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 0.39 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.63 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 0.73 percent of the population.
Of the 8,691 households, 27.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 45.5 percent of these were married couples living together, 18.3 percent were single mothers and 31.5 percent were non-families. 28.4 percent were single households and 13.2 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
24.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 6.9 percent between 18 and 24 years, 26.5 percent between 25 and 44 years, 24.9 percent between 45 and 64, and 17.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For all females there were 92.0 males. For all women aged 18 or over there were 88.6 men.
The median income for a household in the 26,652 US dollars and the median income for a family was 34,648 USD. Males had a median income of $ 27,970 versus $ 21,183 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,413. 21.3 percent of the population and 17.0 percent of families are below the poverty line. 29.8 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 21.5 percent are 65 years of age or older.
