The Alamance County is a county in the state of North Carolina of the United States . The county seat is Graham , named after Governor William Alexander Graham .

The county is located north of the geographic center of North Carolina, is about 40 km to the north from Virginia and has an area of ​​1,126 square kilometers, of which 12 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Caswell County , Orange County , Chatham County , Randolph County, and Guilford County .

Alamance County is divided into 13 townships : 1 (Patterson), 2 (Coble), 3 (Boone Station), 4 (Morton), 5 (Faucette), 6 (Graham), 7 (Albright), 8 (Newlin), 9 (Thompson), 10 (Melville), 11 (Pleasant Grove), 12 (Burlington) and 13 (Haw River).

history

Alamance County was formed on January 9, 1849 from parts of Orange County. It was named after the Great Alamance Creek , a 19 km long river that flows into the Haw River .

A total of 65 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (as of February 21, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Alamance County had 130,800 people in 51,584 households and 35,541 families. The population density was 117 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.61 percent white, 18.76 percent African American, 0.35 percent Native American, 0.90 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 3.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.16 percent were descended from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.75 percent of the population.

Of the 51,584 households, 31.1 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.1 percent of these were married couples living together, 12.7 percent were single mothers and 31.1 percent were non-families. 26.0 percent were single households and 10.1 percent had people 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.95 people.

23.8 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 9.9 percent between 18 and 24 years old, 29.9 percent between 25 and 44 years of age, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64, and 14.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For all females there were 92.5 males. For all women aged 18 or over, there were 89.0 men.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 39,168, and the median income for a family is $ 46,479. Males had a median income of $ 31,906 versus $ 23,367 for females. The per capita income was $ 19,391. 11.1 percent of the population and 7.6 percent of families are below the poverty line. 13.3 percent of them are children and young people under 18 years of age and 12.9 percent are 65 years of age or older.
