These employees needed a place within walking distance to settle down with their families and a town began to develop called Company Shops . Property sales began shortly thereafter, but remained sluggish until after the American Revolutionary War ended . In 1864 about 300 people lived in company shops.

In 1886 the North Carolina Railroad Company moved its headquarters to Manchester , Virginia . The offices and workshops were closed. After the railway company was no longer present, the citizens decided that a new name was necessary for the place.
