The Haw River is the 177 km long left headwaters of the Cape Fear River in the US state of North Carolina .

The river was first mentioned as the Hau River by John Lawson in his 1709 book A New Voyage to Carolina . This is an abbreviation of the Catawba name Saxapahaw , which means mountain foreland.

course

The Haw River rises in the Piedmont at 307  m in a forest a little north of Kernersville . The source is in the northeast of Forsyth County right on the border with Guilford County .

The river initially flows northeast through Guilford County past Oak Ridge and Summerfield . After Summerfield, it briefly runs several times in Rockingham County before finally crossing the border at Haw River State Park . After a short run to the east, it turns to the southeast after the confluence of Rose Creek . It crosses the extreme northeast of Guilford County and shortly thereafter reaches Alamance County .

At Ossipee it takes the Reedy Fork and Travis Creek from the right, before flowing around Burlington and passing the Carolina settlement . It turns south and flows through the town of Haw River , followed by an Interstate 40 bridge . Shortly afterwards, Great Alamance Creek joins Swepsonville from the right . It continues to flow to the southeast and, after the confluence of Cane Creek, briefly forms the border with Orange County from the left , with another important tributary flowing into Cane Creek from the right .

After its confluence, it marks the border with Chatham County before it continues to flow completely into this. At Pittsboro it becomes US 15 and US 64 one after the other before flowing into the southwest end of Jordan Lake . The river flows out of the reservoir just a little to the south. Finally, the Haw River joins the Deep River to form the Cape Fear River at 49  m at Mermaid Point near Moncure on the border with Lee County .
