Robert A. Halvorson
Robert A. Halvorson , called Bob Halvorson, (* 1952 ) is an American civil engineer.
Halvorson initially worked for Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) in Chicago, Houston, New York and London and, at the age of 31, became the youngest partner in this architecture and engineering office in 1983. In 1996 he founded his own engineering office (Halvorson and Partners). In 2015 they merged with WSP / Parsons-Brinckerhoff.
He is a leading civil engineer for high-rise buildings and long-span structures and he has planned more than sixty buildings with 40 or more floors. His buildings include:
- Hyatt Center Chicago (the first skyscraper project in Chicago after 9/11)
- an 85-story skyscraper in the Dubai International Financial Center
- Wells Fargo Plaza (Houston) . To study the behavior under wind load, he personally spent the night on the skyscraper during a hurricane (Alicia, category 3) to take measurements. At that time he was already a partner at SOM.
- 111 West Wacker in Chicago
- Torre Cepsa (Torre Caja) Madrid, his first project with Norman Foster
- Burj Mohammed Bin Rashid in Abu Dhabi. Also with the architect Norman Foster.
- Hanking Center Tower (architects Morphosis)
In 2016 he received the gold medal of the Institution of Structural Engineers , of which he is a fellow. In 2011 he received the John Parmer Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers .
