The Institution of Structural Engineers , abbreviated IStructE, is a global professional organization for structural engineering . It is based in the United Kingdom and has over 23,000 members in 105 states. The institution promotes and awards professional civil engineers and regularly publishes the journal The Structural Engineer .

history

The Institution of Structural Engineers was founded on July 21, 1908 at the Ritz Hotel in London as the Concrete Institute . The background to this was the need to set standards and rules for the use of concrete in industrial construction. The driving force behind the founding was the architect Edwin Sachs (1870-1919), who founded the British Fire Prevention Committee in 1897. The first headquarters were in London's Pall Mall at 8 Waterloo Place; the Society's first president was Robert Windsor-Clive, 1st Earl of Plymouth .

The Concrete Institute was founded as a not-for-profit company with limited liability , renamed the Institution of Structural Engineers on September 28, 1922 . The company wanted to make it clear that it covers all issues and aspects of structural engineering. In 1925 the association had 1,700 members. In the 1920s, qualification measures for engineers were introduced and regional branches were founded. On May 4, 1934, the so-called Royal Charter was drawn up, a royal statute that gives the corporation a special status. The first office outside the UK was established in South Africa in 1937.

The Institution of Structural Engineers is now represented in 32 countries and in 2008 had 23,977 members worldwide.

organization

Members

The members of the Institution of Structural Engineers are divided into different levels. There are levels for prospective engineers ( student members ), trained specialists, associate members and the fellow . Members and fellows are called chartered engineers . Members go through internal entrance exams that take place once a year on the first Friday in April. The seven-hour exam examines admission candidates for their structural engineering, design and practical skills. The candidate must have a feel for the principles of structural planning and be able to implement and present the solution appropriately.

structure

The society is led at the top by a council, which is led by an incumbent president, four future and four former presidents as well as further three-year elected members at the top, representatives of the regional branches and other selected members. In the UK in 2008 there were a total of 49 full-time employees managing the organization.

Tasks and achievements

The Institution of Structural Engineers is an organization that promotes and supports the training and activities of civil engineers through various measures. For example, it provides a library with over 60,000 media. Books, records, technical reports and journals since the 18th century can be found there. The society also publishes its own books or commissions studies. The journal Structural Engineer has been published since 1923 and is now published twice a month.

Prices

The Institution of Structural Engineers awards a number of prizes and awards and honors individual civil engineers for their achievements.

Structural Awards

Infrastructure facilities and structures have been recognized with the Structural Award since 1968 . In 2006, this award was redesigned and added ten disciplines.
