history

The wood-clad facade

The construction of the velodrome in 2009 began, the estimated cost was 105 million GBP . It was the first London Games sports venue to be completed.

The round, curved roof should reflect the geometry as well as the lightness and efficiency of a bicycle; its shape earned the velodrome the nickname "The Pringle". The roof is broken through by numerous windows, so that the spectators can look outside on the “VeloPark” in a corridor leading around and visitors can look in from the outside. In addition, because of the windows, only little artificial light is required in the velodrome, which also ensures natural air ventilation. There is space for 6,000 spectators in the velodrome; the entry price for the finals of the Olympic Games ranged from £ 50 to £ 325.

The track itself was designed by the British architect Ron Webb , who also planned the cycle tracks in Sydney and for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , with the collaboration of multiple British Olympic champion Sir Chris Hoy . It is - as prescribed by the international standard of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), the world cycling association - 250 meters long. The maximum incline in the curves is 42 degrees and the minimum incline on the straight is 12 degrees. It consists of 56 kilometers of Siberian spruce , which were built with 350,000 nails.

In February 2011, the Velodrome was opened and inaugurated by selected cyclists, including Chris Hoy, Victoria Pendleton , Jason Kenny and Ross Edgar . The first event in the new sports facility was a track cycling World Cup run in February 2012. After the Olympic Games, the track cycling competitions of the Summer Paralympics 2012 were held there. The next major international event will be the 2016 UCI Track World Championships in the Velodrome.

In October 2011, the Velodrome was awarded the Prime Minister's Better Public Building Award . In December 2011 it received the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence . This civil engineering prize is awarded annually by the British Institution of Structural Engineers.

On June 7, 2015, Bradley Wiggins set a new hour record over 54.526 kilometers in front of a sold out house at the Lee Valley Velodrome .
