The basketball arena was a temporary sports hall in London that could hold 12,000 spectators. It was located in the district of Stratford ( London Borough of Newham ), in the north of the Olympic Park , right next to the Olympic village .

history

Interior of the arena

Preparatory work began in October 2009. After 15 months of construction, the hall was completed in June 2011. During the Olympic Games in 2012 , the basketball preliminary round and the handball finals took place here. At the Paralympics 2012 , the hall was the venue for the tournaments in wheelchair rugby and wheelchair basketball ; the capacity was reduced to 10,000 places.

After the competition was over, the basketball arena was dismantled. It is therefore the largest temporary facility in Olympic history. The hall is to be set up again at a different location. Rio de Janeiro , the venue for the 2016 Olympic Games, was named as a possible interested party . However, those responsible there abandoned this plan because they did not consider it feasible.
