At the 2012 Summer Olympics in the British capital London , two handball competitions were held from July 28 to August 12 .
Twelve teams each took part in the tournament for women and men. Up to the quarter-finals, the venue was the Copper Box in the Olympic Park , which has a capacity of 7,000 spectators. The finals took place in the basketball arena , which has a capacity of 12,000 spectators.

Qualification criteria
There will be 336 athletes taking part in the competitions, twelve teams of each gender with 14 players each. The following qualification criteria count for both women and men. The 2011 world champion and the four winners of the continental championships that were held between 2010 and 2012 are qualified for the Olympic tournament. ( Asia and Oceania together form a continental association). The UK is automatically qualified to host.
The last opportunity to qualify in 2012 is three tournaments per gender, with two teams each qualifying. Four teams will take part in each of these tournaments, the places will be awarded after the performance at the World and Continental Championships. The six best teams in the World Cup that have not yet qualified for the Olympic tournament take part. There were also two teams each from Europe and America as well as one team from Asia and Africa.

The French team qualified as world champions for men and the Norwegian team for women. At the European Championships Denmark qualified for the men and Sweden for the women, Argentina and Brazil were added to the Pan American Games and Tunisia and Angola to the African Championships. The South Korean team secured participation in the Asian qualifying tournament.
