William Accambray (born April 8, 1988 in Cannes ) is a French handball player . He is 1.94 meters tall and weighs 104 kilograms and is mostly used in the left rear position.

Career

William Accambray started playing handball at the age of 6 at ASPTT Grasse . At the age of 14 he moved to the Handball Mougins Mouans-Sartoux (HBMMS) club; a year later he moved to the handball club Mandelieu HB . He began his professional career at HB Mougins Mouans-Sartoux Mandelieu in the French Maritime Alps, where he played in the Liga Nationale 2.

After a year he moved to the French first division club Montpellier HB . In his first season with Montpellier, he only made eight appearances in which he scored eleven goals. In the second season, William Accambray made 25 appearances and scored 44 times, including one from the 7-meter point. In the following season he played 20 games and scored 39 times; in the 2008/09 season he scored 74 goals in 26 games. In the next year he hit the gate 118 times. In the 2010/11 season, in which he scored 139 goals, he was named the best player in the Ligue Nationale de Handball . In the 2011/12 season, he extended his contract in Montpellier HB to 2016. So far, William Accambray threw 474 goals in 142 games and thus achieved an average of 3.3 goals per game. With Montpellier HB he played in the EHF Champions League from 2005/2006 to 2011/2012 . For the 2014/15 season Accambray moved to Paris Saint-Germain together with his team-mate Thierry Omeyer . In the summer of 2017 he joined the top Hungarian club KC Veszprém . On October 5, 2018, he was loaned to the Slovenian club RK Celje until the end of the 2018/19 season. He then moved to the Belarusian club Brest GK Meschkow . Accambray will run for the French first division club Pays d'Aix UC from the 2020/21 season .

National team

For the French national team , Accambray played his first international match on March 19, 2009 against the Portuguese selection , in which he replaced Nikola Karabatić . So far, he has thrown 223 goals in 105 international matches.

He was in the squad for the 2010 European handball championship in Austria and was European champion. At the 2011 World Cup in Sweden , he scored 34 goals. William Accambray scored his first goal of the World Cup in the first group game against Tunisia in the 48 minute to 24:16. In the same game he hit the goal two more times. In the second game against Egypt , William only played eight minutes and didn't hit the goal. In the 3rd game of the group stage against Bahrain , Accambray scored five times, just like in the 4th game against the German team . In the last game of the group stage against Spain , he only scored 5: 1 in the 5th minute. In the first main round game William Accambray scored six times against Hungary , in the next game against Norway he scored five times and in the last game of the main round group 1 against Iceland he threw four goals. In the semifinals against the selection of Sweden , he scored three goals. In the final France met Denmark ; Accambray scored two goals and became world champions with the French.

Due to an elbow injury, William Accambray did not get much playing time at the European Championships in Serbia , where he scored 13 times, including 10 in the last game against the Icelandic selection . In the summer of 2012 he took part in the Olympic Games in London , where he won the gold medal. At the European Championships in 2014 he was European Champion. In 2017 he won the world title for the second time.

His parents Jacques Accambray and Isabelle Accambray were also competitive athletes. His father specialized in hammer throwing and his mother in discus throwing . His younger brother Michaël Accambray plays volleyball in Montpellier. His older sister, Jennifer Accambray , specializes in javelin throwing.
