Incidents

At the European Handball Championship on January 24th, 2012 in Novi Sad, Serbian right-wing extremists and nationalist hooligans attacked Croatian supporters. With baseball bats, bricks and axes, dozens of masked thugs lay in wait for the motorcade with Croatian license plates, beat up Croatian fans and demolished their cars. After the incident, the Serbian police escorted the Croatians to the border and apologized for the incident. On January 26, the names of twelve perpetrators were published in the Serbian media; for the most part, they were already known violent football hooligans. According to the Serbian newspaper Press, 5,000 police officers were used to secure the semi-final match between Serbia and Croatia, which took place on January 27, 2012 , in order to avoid further clashes. In order to ensure that the Croatian spectators arrive and depart safely, police units also protected the route between the Croatian border and Belgrade. Nevertheless, some tour operators had canceled organized trips to the semi-finals.
