The 10th European Women's Handball Championship was held from December 4th to 16th, 2012 in Serbia . The organizer was the European Handball Federation (EHF). Montenegro won the European Championship for the first time.
Applicants
The European handball federation decided at its meeting in Vienna in 2008 on the award of the European championship. In addition to the Netherlands, Serbia and Ukraine , Germany was also the applicant ; the German handball federation entered for the year 2012 with a double application for the European championship of the women and that of the men. The Netherlands were awarded the contract.
On June 3, 2012, the Dutch Handball Federation gave up the organization of the tournament without giving a reason. This is the second time since 2003 that the Dutch association has returned a tournament. Thus, the alignment was put out to tender again, with Serbia winning the bid.
qualification
The qualifying games for the 2012 European Championship began in October 2011, and 30 teams took part.
The teams from Finland and the United Kingdom (22:31; 20:27) and the teams from Israel and Greece (25:30; 27:23) played for the last two free places in the qualification. In Leek in April 2011, the 28 teams (the Netherlands as the organizer and Norway as the defending champion had already qualified for the finals) from four pots into which they were divided according to their EHF ranking were drawn into seven qualifying groups. The draw brought the following group allocation. The two best teams in each group qualified for the European Championship.
