The 14th European Women's Handball Championship was held in Denmark from December 3rd to December 20th, 2020 . That was the fourth event in this country. Actually, Denmark should host the European Championship together with Norway; the tournament had already taken place in these two countries in 2010 . However, Norway withdrew due to the COVID-19 pandemic . The organizer was the European Handball Federation (EHF).
Host
The 12th Congress of the European Handball Federation (EHF) awarded the event to the Danish and Norwegian handball federations during its meeting on September 20, 2014 in Dublin . In September 2020, the EHF and the national handball federations from Denmark and Norway announced that the European Championship would be held, despite the COVID-19 pandemicas planned to take place in December of that year. On November 16, however, the Norwegian handball association announced that due to the thorough assessment of the health authority and the clear demands and wishes of the political authorities, the organization would no longer be carried out and the European Championship could therefore no longer take place in Norway. On November 23rd, the Danish government gave the Danish handball federation its approval for the European championship, which is carried out by the Danish handball federation (DHF) alone.
Venues
The following halls were used as the venues for the event:
Herning (Denmark) |
Kolding (Denmark) |
Jyske Bank Kasten 14,000 seats, maximum 500 spectators |
Sydbank Arena 5,200 seats, maximum 500 spectators |
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Norwegian Handball Federation ( NHF ) announced on September 9th that all games in Norway should only take place in the Trondheim spectrum in front of a maximum of 200 spectators. The venues in Stavanger and Oslo were canceled. Currently, the COVID-19 guidelines in Denmark allow 500 spectators in the halls. On November 6th, the Danish government ordered a partial lockdown in the regions of Nordjylland and the European Championship venue Frederikshavn until December 3rd. This also affects the Arena Nord in Frederikshavn, which must remain closed during the partial lockdown. Therefore, the Danish Handball Federation ( DHF) submitted an application to the EHF to change the venue. The EHF and the Danish handball association decided on the same day that the Jyske Bank Boxes Arena in Herning would also take over Group B and thus be made available as a replacement venue. On November 16, the Norwegian handball association withdrew as the host. After intensive consultation, the Sydbank Arena in Kolding was added as a further venue. In this hall the games of the preliminary round groups C and D took place. In addition, the main round group II was held there. The preliminary round groups A and B, as well as the finals, took place in the Jyske Bank Boxes venue in Hering.
qualification
The qualification should take place in 2 rounds. With Denmark and Norway, 2 participation places had already been awarded. Therefore, only one group was needed for the first qualifying round. Group winners Greece prevailed against the women’s national teams from Israel, Luxembourg and Finland and got into the second qualifying round. In the second round, the 14 eligible teams should be determined from the 28 teams in 7 groups of four. The 2 best in the group should qualify to participate. However, the 2nd qualifying round was canceled by the EHF after the 2nd round because of the COVID-19 pandemicfirst interrupted and finally canceled on April 24th. The EHF then distributed the remaining places to the other 14 best teams of the last European Handball Championship for women according to the ranking. Since Norway finished fifth and Denmark eighth, the Czech Republic moved up in 15th and Croatia in 16th.

- ↑ In the 25th minute, the Croatian player Andrea Šimara was disqualified for a head hit with her arm after video evidence with the red and blue card, which was followed by a report. The EHF uses the blue card as a red card, so there are 2 red + 1 blue cards here.
