Xenia Smits (born April 22, 1994 in Wilrijk ) is a German handball player of Belgian origin.

Career

Xenia Smits started with handball in Belgium. In 2008 she came to Germany and attended the handball performance center of the HSG Bad Wildungen . In 2010, the 1.82-meter tall back player moved to HSG Blomberg-Lippe , where she was used in the handball Bundesliga in the 2010/11 season . In 2013 she was honored with the Erhard Wunderlich Memorial Prize as handball talent of the year because in the 2012/13 season she was already one of the top performers of the Bundesliga team as an A-youth . From summer 2015 she played for the French first division team Metz Handball . With Metz she won the French championship in 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 and the French cup in 2017 and 2019. In summer 2020 she moved to the German Bundesliga club SG BBM Bietigheim .

From 2011, Smits took part in courses of the German Handball Federation. She could not take part in the U-19 European Championship in August 2013, for which she was nominated, because she was not yet naturalized at the time. On November 13, 2013, she was appointed by national coach Heine Jensen to the extended squad of the German women's national team for the 2013 World Cup . A year later, Smits took part in the European Championship , where she scored one goal in five games. In the same year she took part in the U-20 World Cup in Croatia , where she came fourth with the German team. In 2015 she was appointed by national coach Jakob Vestergaard to the 16-man squad for the 2015 women's handball world championship in Denmark . She has played 57 games so far in which she scored 136 goals.
