The 21st women's handball world championship was held in Serbia from December 6-22, 2013 . The organizer was the International Handball Federation (IHF). The defending champion was Norway. In October 2010, the IHF gave Serbia the promise to host the World Cup. The only opposing candidate in the application was South Korea . Brazil became world champion in 2013 after beating Serbia 22:20 in the final.
According to the long-time IHF President Hassan Moustafa , the tournament was one of the most organized in the history of women's handball and was supported by 1,375 volunteers , among others . More than 30 TV teams ensured a live broadcast in 140 countries. It is also the most popular women's handball tournament worldwide. In Germany, Sport 1 broadcast all German games live on stream and TV.
During the finals, the world record was broken three times in a row within a few days. On December 22, 2013, a new worldwide attendance record was set at the final game between the teams of Serbia and Brazil for a handball game held in a hall between two women's teams (19,467 spectators). The record set on December 20 for the semi-final game between Serbia and Poland (18,236 spectators) was broken after just two days. Previously, the record set on December 18 in the quarter-final game between Serbia and Norway (16,028 spectators) was also broken after two days.
