The 5th women's handball world championship was held from December 8th to 15th, 1973 in Yugoslavia . A total of twelve teams competed. Host Yugoslavia secured the title with a 16:11 win over Romania and became world champions for the first and only time.

Preliminary round

In the preliminary round, the twelve participants competed in four groups with three teams each. The two best teams in each group qualified for the main round. The bottom of the group competed against each other in a placement round for places 9 to 12.

2 groups of 4 teams were formed, whereby the two best-placed teams in preliminary round groups A and B were assigned to group E, and the two best-placed teams in preliminary round groups C and D were assigned to group F. The results of the teams against the teams that move into the main round from their own preliminary round group were taken with them.
