The 2nd women's handball world championship was held from July 7th to 15th, 1962 in Romania . A total of nine teams initially competed in a preliminary round in three groups. This was followed by the semi-finals with six teams in two groups, the consolation round for the bottom of the group for places 7 to 9 and the placement games. In front of 20,000 spectators, Romania won the title by beating Denmark 8-5 and became world champions for the first time.
