The 8th women's handball world championship was held in Hungary from December 2 to 12, 1982 . A total of twelve teams competed in the preliminary round in three groups. This was followed by a final round in which places 1–6 were played out in a group, as well as a placement round in which places 7–12 in a group were determined. The Soviet Union was able to win its first title at a world championship after the Olympic victory in 1980 . On the next places followed hosts Hungary and Yugoslavia , which relegated the defending champion GDR to fourth place.
